Effective treatment for depression at The Cabin Bangkok
Depression is a commonly used word, but it can describe many types of conditions. It is important to be able to discriminate between true clinical depression, and depressive symptoms. Most people feel symptoms of depression – lack of motivation, sleep disorders, pessimistic outlook, focus on negativity, and decrease of energy level at some time in their lives.
Normally, depressive symptoms will improve and go away with enough time or a change in a life situation. For those unwilling to wait, or unable to alter life circumstances, counselling can be an effective and simple way to make thinking and attitude “modifications” that help one to push through the depressive phase and gain tools to help prevent the return of the symptoms.
Clinical depression, often called “Major Depressive Disorder” involves neurological and cognitive impairments that effect the person across many areas of feeling, thinking and action. The most common treatment for major depression is medications and there are many choices of drug interventions on the market today. The downside of only treating depression with medication is that while the symptoms are masked, the underlying problem remains, and as tolerance to medications increases, the symptoms can often return.
At The Cabin Bangkok, we treat clinical depression with customised and targeted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Because treatment is 1-on-1, the treatment plan is specific to the needs, challenges and abilities of each client. CBT has been shown to be 2-2.5 times more effective for treating depression than medications alone. CBT combines identifying and altering dysfunctional thinking patterns with training and utilising new behaviours, which reinforce the new, functional thought patterns – resulting in an increase in realistic, empowering emotional stability.
Additional benefits of CBT include the lack of side effects and mental interference that medications can cause and the fact that all the techniques learned in therapy then “belong” to the client, allowing the client to avoid future episodes and master the skills that reduce the need for future therapy. The client learns from the therapist, but does not develop a dependency on the counsellor in order to remain happy.
There is no set duration for CBT, however, it is consider one of the “brief” therapies and the more frequent the sessions, the sooner the client can reduce symptoms and return to their normal state of function. Generally, 2-3 sessions per week for 2-3 months are all a client needs to completely address a major depressive episode.
